Tone-colored characters + offline desktop app fills a real gap for home Chinese learning.

Strengths
  • Tone-colored character display is genuinely unique compared to static PDFs and web tools.
  • Cross-platform offline-first (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android) with no account friction.
  • Smart pricing: free for core features, reasonable family tier ($29/yr) removes paywalls for content access.
Weaknesses
  • Narrow audience: mainly parents teaching Chinese at home, not a broad market.
  • Relies on user adoption of desktop app + cross-platform consistency (iOS/Android still in app store review).

Post Description

I built Copyworks to teach my kids Chinese at home. Existing options were either static PDFs, expensive subscriptions, or web-only tools that couldn't work offline.

It generates printable practice worksheets with tone-colored characters (color-coded by tone), step-by-step stroke order guides, and traditional grid layouts (米字格, 田字格, etc.). Includes 1,200+ lessons covering HSK 1-9, YCT, TOCFL, and 33 textbook courses.

Free tier: tone colors, stroke order, all grid types, HSK Level 1 content. No account needed, works fully offline.

Family plan ($29/yr or $49 lifetime) unlocks the full content library, additional character modes, and PDF export without watermark.

Built with Flutter. Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) is live. iOS and Android are in App Store/Play Store review now.
