Real-time voice translation between strangers using WebRTC and frontier model APIs.

Strengths
  • WebRTC + real-time audio pipeline with bidirectional translation is technically non-trivial
  • 70+ input languages with interpreter-style overlay is a thoughtful UX choice
  • No account, no recordings - privacy-first approach for anonymous chat
Weaknesses
  • API orchestration of existing translation services, not novel architecture
  • Google Translate and Skype Translator already solve voice translation

Post Description

Babel pairs you with a random stranger for an anonymous voice call. You each pick what you speak and what you want to hear — if they differ, you hear their actual voice quietly, then a real-time AI translation spoken over it. Both directions at once, interpreter-style.

Cool because 85% of this was 1-shotted with an MVP with frontier models and APIs. Getting the real time Web-RTC took a bit of debugging, but nothing hardcore.

What was literally magic for most of human history is a prompt away.
