TV-first media server with Apple companion apps, but Plex and Jellyfin already solve this.

Strengths

  • Handoff-style playback switching between TV and Apple devices works seamlessly
  • Zero cloud dependency means all data stays on local network and TV storage
Weaknesses
  • Google TV only, no Roku or other smart TV platform support mentioned

Post Description

So Kino is an app you install on your TV and it works like a media server with a decent video player(subtitles, audio streams, playback speed, continue from last position). It uses the internal TV storage + a USB storage you can plug.

Then you have the iOS and macOS apps that you can use to upload your videos to the TV. Other than uploading and file management, you can control the playback and stream the videos from the TV back to the iOS and macOS app and even switch the playback back and forth between the large screen and the iOS/macOS device like with handoff.

It works pretty well.
